Marvel Studios Cast 1 Thunderbolts Actor Way Before the Others

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are excitedly expecting the release of Thunderbolts, the concluding film in Phase 5, thanks to Marvel Studios' presentations at San Diego Comic-Con and the D23 Fan Expo.

Instead of being an Avengers-centric film, this new instalment will serve as the team-up film for the upcoming Phase, bringing together darker characters from throughout the MCU history. Yelena Belova, a breakout star from Phase 4, will be leading this endeavour, but she will also be supported by important veterans like Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier and Wyatt Russell's U.S. Agent.

Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Sebastian Stan spoke with Extra at the D23 Fan Expo about how long they've known they were cast in the antihero team-up film Thunderbolts.

Russell and Stan acknowledged that they were unaware of the development until recently, although Louis-Dreyfus said that Marvel Studios had previously informed her that she would be returning as Val in Thunderbolts. Then Stan said that Louis-Dreyfus' early involvement in the project is appropriate given Val's alleged role as the Nick Fury-like recruiter in the movie:

ExtraTV: “I feel like we’ve been waiting for this cast announcement for so long. How long have you guys had to keep it a secret and how did it feel out there?”

Stan: “I don’t think any of us knew, maybe you did…?”

Louis-Dreyfus: “I think did… I actually knew.”

Russell: “Oh nice. Nice. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. I didn’t know.”

ExtraTV: “Really?”

Russell: “I mean, I knew…”

Stan: “It was good, because it sort of, kind of plays into the show that we had and sort of when you came in, there was a plan, so that so far reality is matching well.”

The group also discussed their time at D23 and their progress in bringing Thunderbolts to life in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Louis-Dreyfus described the response they received on stage as "surreal," but she also acknowledged that it was "odd" given that they hadn't yet started working on the movie.
